Belize is a small nation on the eastern coast of Central America, bordered by Guatemala and Mexico. It is roughly a tenth of the size of the UK in land area, and is the only Central American nation without a Pacific coastline. Belize is a developing nation, and it is important that this development is done responsibly to keep environmental effects to a minimum. Belize has a very high biodiversity (it has lots of animal and plant species to be found in a relatively small area). One of the major issues in Belize that is threatening its biodiversity is deforestation. This needs to be controlled, as not only does it destroy habitats, but it also leads to desertification of the jungle. Belize is party to several international agreements that allow the continuing development of the country, whilst prohibiting this development from impacting on the surrounding environment. The agreements include, but are not limited to, preserving biodiversity, stopping climate change, stopping desertification, protecting endangered species, preserving the ozone layer and protecting wetlands. Overall, the work that Trekforce undertake is a small but essential part of aiding the development of Belize, whist ensuring that this does not heavily impact on the environment.
